How to stop the spread of Ebola in Indiana
New Jersey public health officials are trying to get as many people vaccinated against the deadly virus as possible, and some of the state’s biggest hospitals are working to test people with Ebola as soon as possible.
The state has already seen a dramatic increase in cases, with about 30 deaths, and now a new surge is underway, officials said Monday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working to vaccinate as many as 1,000 people in the Garden State and surrounding counties, the agency said in a statement.
Public health officials hope to vaccine as many individuals as possible by the end of the week.
But the effort will be complicated by the fact that it’s taking place on a tight schedule, and not everyone will be fully vaccinated by then, the CDC said.
Officials have been working for weeks to get all of the necessary vaccines to be distributed in the New Jersey area, including a vaccine for dengue fever and two doses of the hepatitis B vaccine.
The governor said the first doses will be distributed Friday, followed by the second dose on Monday.
Chris Christie said Tuesday he’s been told he’s likely to get a second dose of the second hepatitis B shot, but his office has not yet released a final date for the shots.
There are two options: Either people in New Jersey get two doses and others get one, Christie said.
In a statement, the governor said his office will work with public health and other partners to make sure the shots are ready by the middle of next week.
He said that since his office had not yet received confirmation of who would get a dose, he is reviewing whether to call a special session to pass a measure to make the second shot available.
The second dose, like the first, will not protect against the coronavirus, which is spreading like wildfire across the United States.
New Jersey is one of the first states to declare a state of emergency after the deadly coronaviruses.
The governors office has also been working to get the state of Indiana and New York vaccinated, and officials in both states said they are now getting the shots as well.
The governors office is also working with other partners and state agencies to make it happen.
