DEATH ON THE GROUND: DEATH IN MADRID – MAD RIVER: The first death of the year on the banks of the River Madrid in the south of the country was reported as a man was found dead on the riverbank, in the northern city of Dario del Carmen.
The man was reportedly walking on the same road where a pedestrian was killed on Sunday morning.
The dead man was identified as Jose Alberto García, 40, from the municipality of Oruro, said a spokeswoman for the state health authority, which is coordinating the response.
García had been in the area since early November, said state health director Eduardo Gómez.
The body was found on Monday at a reservoir in Oruros.
He was believed to have died of a heart attack and was not wearing a mask.
The toll of the river’s latest river death, which the authorities have described as a suspected drowning, is expected to rise.
A new outbreak of coronavirus has been detected in the capital Madrid, where a man died on Sunday after contracting the virus while in the city’s central Botanical Gardens.
The disease has claimed five lives in the Spanish capital since the beginning of March, and the number of confirmed cases in the country’s capital has risen to more than 60,000.
On Friday, Madrid Mayor Ada Colau said she was “horrified” by the latest death and was asking for prayers for the man’s family.
The city has seen more than 70,000 cases, of which 33,000 have been confirmed by authorities.
More than 3,500 people have died from the disease in Spain since the outbreak began in the spring of last year.
